BANKS – The bail-in and too many amnesias of Salvini, Berlusconi, the left Pd and Grillo

Salvini, Berlusconi, Grillo and the left Pd scream about the so-called betrayed savings of the four banks in crisis but pretend to forget that they quietly voted in favor of or did not oppose in the European Parliament the directive introducing the bail-in and that, albeit with some sin, he no longer wants to make taxpayers pay for bank failures

BANKS – The bail-in and too many amnesias of Salvini, Berlusconi, the left Pd and Grillo

In the face of shameless populism and demogoguery that mounts on the so-called betrayed savings of the four banks on the verge of bankruptcy saved by the Renzi government decree, a thoroughbred journalist like Federico Fubini was needed to restore the truth and remind the forgetful of their guilty amnesias .

In today's "Corriere della Sera" Fubini argues that it will not be easy for Italy to obtain the go-ahead from Brussels to set up a fund to repay, at least in part, the bondholders of the four banks in crisis (Banca delle Marche, Banca people of Etruria and Lazio and the savings banks of Ferrara and Chieti).

Then appropriately Fubini begins to leaf through the book of memories. "Matteo Salvini, the leader of the League, - writes the Corriere journalist - accuses the Government of 'having robbed 150 savers', but the minutes of the European Parliament show that on 15 April 2014 he himself did not oppose the directive (Ed. that of the bail-in) which today caused the zeroing of those titles (Salvini abstained in the final vote)”.

But let's go on: "Silvio Berlusconi – adds Fubini – is asking the Government to intervene 'as soon as possible', yet all his MEPs in Strasbourg voted in favor of the directive". In turn, "the left of the Democratic Party is claiming the compensation fund, after having also voted en bloc in favor of the European regulations that affect creditors".

Finally, "the Five Stars themselves (Beppe Grillo's) have often criticized the use of public money to 'save the banks', without explaining that the losses of private creditors at that point would have become automatic".

What to say? Like lies, amnesias also have short legs and citizens and voters should be reminded of this every day.
