Company Description

Eni SpA is an Italian multinational active in the oil, natural gas, chemical, production and marketing of electricity and energy from fossil fuels sectors. Eni is considered one of the "supermajor" oil companies in the world. Over the years it has diversified its activities into other sectors such as nuclear energy, renewable energy, mining, chemicals and plastics, refining/extraction machinery and distribution, textile industry and news.

In 2020, Eni ranked 113th in terms of turnover and 24th in the energy sector in the ranking of Fortune Global 500 by turnover. According to Forbes Global 2000, Eni is the 468th largest public company in the world.

It operates in 68 countries with 30.775 employees, 21,170 in Italy alone. The head office is in the EUR district in Rome.
The company is currently led by Lucia Calvosa (president since May 13, 2020) and by Claudio Descalzi (CEO since 8 May 2014).

As of 2021, Eni has about 20% of the market in Italian service stations.

The activities are divided into three main divisions: Exploration & Production, Gas & Power and Refining & Marketing.

Since its creation in 1953 Eni is owned by the Italian State. In the nineties the State decides to privatize the company. Between 1995 and 2001, the government sold part of the share capital, retaining a share of more than 30%. Thanks to the stake in its possession, the Italian government, through the Ministry of Economy and Finance, has control of the company. the Italian state, according to the law of 30 July 1994, n. 474, has some special powers (golden shares) to be exercised in compliance with pre-established criteria.

Economic and financial analysis of the company

ENI (acronym for Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi) was created by the Italian state as a public body under the presidency of Enrico Mattei in 1953. ENI had the task of "promoting and undertaking initiatives of national interest in the hydrocarbon and natural gas sectors". Mattei became president of Eni and of the main subsidiaries including Agip, Snam and Anic. The birth of ENI met with opposition from private industrialists who accused the company of unfair competition since Eni was financed by the state.
