Athens replies to Juncker: lack of sincerity

"In a negotiation, the necessary index of good faith and credibility is sincerity". The spokesman for the Greek government, Gabriel Sakellaridis, wrote in a note in reference to the speech given today by the President of the European Commission Jean Claude Junckerthus questioning its reliability.

Previously, the number one of the Community Executive had said he was disappointed with the Greek Executive, accusing it of being solely responsible for the breakdown of the negotiations that have been going on for months between Athens and Brussels and, therefore, solely responsible for the now imminent bankruptcy Greek, which will take effect tomorrow at midnight, when Greek debts to the IMF for 1,6 billion euros fall due.

Juncker, after having defended the Commission and the Eurogroup from all accusations, also urged Greek voters to vote yes in next Sunday's referendum, in which the country is called to express itself on the new austerity measures requested by international creditors in return to avoid the Greek default.

The referendum will come too late to avoid the country's bankruptcy, so the value of the vote will rather be on the work of the Tsipras government, which in the event of a rejection by the people could take a step back and leave room for new elections. However, Juncker upped the ante, stating that a Greek vote against would be like "saying no to Europe".
