Assopopolari celebrates its 140th anniversary: ​​conference in the Senate

The Association of Popular Banks (Assopopolari) turns 140 and celebrates its birthday with a conference in Rome on the figure of its founder Luigi Luzzatti and on the development of cooperation in Italy and in the world - Popular banks in Italy, both those the reform transformed the remaining cooperatives into joint stock companies, representing 25% of the banking system

Assopopolari (the association that brings together all the Italian popular banks, both those transformed into joint stock companies by the recent reform and those that remain cooperative based) turns 140 and celebrates the anniversary with a conference held on Monday 18 April in Rome ( Palazzo San Macuto, Senate) and which is dedicated to the figure of its founder, Luigi Luzzatti and to the development of cooperation in Italy and in the world.

Popular banks represent 25% of the banking system in Italy and are grouped together in Assopopolari, which includes 63 member banks, 52 financial companies, 150 correspondent banks for a total of approximately 8.800 branches, 1,4 million members, 12,4 million customers and 80.700 employees, funding of 9.000 billion euro and loans to households and businesses exceeding 7.000 billion.

On the occasion of the conference, the volume "Popular credit at the service of the country" will be presented by Giuseppe De Lucia Lumeno, general secretary of Assopopolari, which traces the 140-year history of the Association and highlights the characteristics of efficiency and solidarity of the banks popular. A copy of the research on "Global banking cooperation, an expanding reality" will also be distributed.

The conference will be attended by Monique Leroux, president of Credit Desjardins and of the International Cooperative Alliance, Giulio Sapelli, professor of Economic History at the State University of Milan, Giovanni Ferri, Pro-Rector of the Lumsa University of Rome, Eric Meyer of the University of Munster, Rym Ayadi, director of the International Research Center on Cooperative Finance and Giuseppe De Lucia Lumeno, general secretary of Assopopolari. The conference will be moderated by Gennaro Sangiuliano, deputy director of TG1.
