Dormant insurance and policies: "Awakened" another 335 million

The awakening continues dormant policies, insurance that has reached its expiry date, never collected and therefore at risk of prescription. Thanks to a cross-check between the tax codes of the policyholders and the data on deaths from the Revenue Agency, the Insurance Supervisory Institute (Ivass) has recently recovered another 21.370 policies, for a value of approximately 335 million euro. Money "already paid or in the process of being paid to the beneficiaries", explains the Authority.

Over half of these are policies that have expired and which policyholders have neglected to collect, while 40% relate to cases in which the companies were unaware of the death of the policyholder.

Those who have just awakened are only a part of 900 "potentially dormant" policies on which IVASS, in the middle of last year, he had made a commitment to investigate.

Meanwhile, the Institute has also ascertained that 436 life policies have lapsed. Their total value, which amounts to approx 7 million euro, will have to be donated by the insurance companies to the Fondo Rapporti Dormienti.

In all, from 2017 to today, IVASS has revived 208.863 life policies for a total of around 3,9 billion euros.

The Institute also recalls that "to check whether a deceased family member had taken out a life insurance policy, you can use the Ania coverage research service or contact the insurance intermediary, the bank or the insurance company that the family member used (Download a request facsimile). "

Meanwhile, the number one of the National Association of Insurance Companies, Maria Bianca Farina, let it be known that "in 2018 the collection of prizes” of the Italian insurance companies “exceeded 135 billion euros, marking an increase of 3,2% compared to the previous year. Both the Life and Non-Life policies sector contributed to this positive result – concludes Farina – This confirms the solidity of our sector, to which Italian families continue to entrust an important part of their savings and the protection of assets and Health".
