In Italy there are approx 462 buildings with lifts for which 525 million euros are spent each year on maintenance with Liguria registering the highest per capita expenditure (15,7 euros/inhabitant). This is what emerges from an analysis by Thyssenkrupp Elevator Italia, a company specializing in lifts and escalators.

According to the analysis by Thyssenkrupp Elevator, after Liguria, the regions where the per capita expenditure on repairs is higher are Piedmont (11,8 euros/inhabitant) and Lazio (10), followed by Puglia (9,7) and Lombardy ( 9,6). Maintenance impacts to a lesser extent in Basilicata (5 euro/inhabitant), Veneto (5,5), Tuscany and Calabria (both 5,7).
The average Italian per capita expenditure is around 8,5 euros, a figure given by the fact that the Italian lift fleet is the largest, but also the "oldest" in Europe. About 40% of the plants in operation are over 30 years old and over 60% are not equipped with modern technologies capable of guaranteeing an absolute level of safety for users. The systems installed before 1999 are not equipped with modern technologies capable of guaranteeing the minimum level of safety required by European standards (New Lift Directive 2014/33/EU). Think, for example, of emergency call systems, automatic door closing systems and leveling between the floor and the car.
Liguria, Piedmont and Abruzzo are the first three regions for the presence of lifts in Italy. According to an analysis by Thyssenkrupp Elevator Italia, a company specializing in lifts and escalators, in Liguria there is one building with a lift for every 70 inhabitants, in Piedmont one for every 106 and in Abruzzo one for every 109. Lombardy is the region with the highest number number of lifts, over 80 buildings have at least one.
Thyssenkrupp Elevator Italia notes that the oldest lifts are found in Puglia, with an average of almost 19 years of age. They also have a high average age in Valle d'Aosta (14 years) and Veneto (13 years). The regions where Thyssenkrupp Elevator Italia recorded the highest number of maintenance interventions are Puglia with 6 interventions on average per lift per year, Lazio and Tuscany with 4.
