AMAZON, REFUNDS COMING SOON ON ALREADY PURCHASED E-BOOKS

Owners of a Kindle, Amazon's ebook reader, could soon receive a refund on purchases already made of e-books and see their prices fall in the future if a US judge approves a legal settlement with a series of publishers accused of fix the prices of e-books.

In fact, Amazon has communicated to its buyers that they could receive rebates ranging from 30 cents to $1,32 per book for purchases made between April 2010 and May 2012. The books for which you will receive compensation are those of the publishing houses that have agreed to come to an amicable settlement. The decision will be taken by the court next February, after the US Department of Justice accused Apple Inc and five publishers of agreeing on prices as a move to counter Amazon's dominance of the e-book sector. Three companies, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster and Lagardere SCA, have agreed to reach an amicable settlement of the dispute.

E-books saw their popularity double in 2011 in the United States, accounting for 15% of the market versus 6% in 2010, according to data from the Association of American Publishers and the Book Industry Study Group. They have guaranteed two billion dollars in revenue for publishers, compared to 11,1 billion for paper books.
