The blog is 24 years old. The date of birth of this particular type of website has in fact been conventionally set on July 18, 1997, i.e. when the US computer scientist Dave Winer released Frontier's NewsPage, the first multimedia communication software. In short, the first blog in history was not published that day, but the first platform to create one was created, even if its inventor never used the word "blog". The first blog was actually published on December 23 of the same year, thanks to Jorn Barger, an American trader who was passionate about hunting, who decided to Open your own personal page entitled Robot Wisdom to share the results of his web searches regarding his hobby. In some way we also owe him the intuition of the name: in fact he coined the word weblog to describe your site's list of links. And from weblog in 1999 we moved on to the abbreviation blog, the one definitively used and invented by Peter Merholz, who proposed it on his site peterme.com. Playing with the word WebLog, he created the phrase We Blog (or Wee Blog).
In 1999 the blog also became fashionable in Italy, with the birth of the first free services dedicated to the management of personal sites. Among the most used, some of which even today, it is worth mentioning Blogger, AlterVista, WordPress, blogsome, Il Cannocchiale, Io Bloggo, Blogdrops, Noiblogger, Libero, LiveJournal, Windows Live Spaces, MySpace, Skyrock. In the XNUMXs there was the real boom of this form of online communication: blogs all over the world they have come to be over 150 million, only to then begin a downward spiral with the advent of social networks, which have at least partially absorbed their function. Blogs are classified into four categories: diary blog, thematic blog (including journalistic blogs), literary blog, professional and commercial blogs. Diary blogs make up 59% of the total, thematic blogs 31% while literary blogs 10%. These percentage data are the results of the analysis done on a sample of 100 blogs examined in April 2007 and randomly searched on Google Blog Search.
