Eni expands its lithium battery business: construction begins on its Brindisi gigafactory.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held in the presence of Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy. The transformation of the Versalis site is now underway with Eni and Seri Industrial's project to build energy storage systems.

Eni expands its lithium battery business: construction begins on its Brindisi gigafactory.

Eni started the construction of the Brindisi gigafactory where it will produce lithium batteries-iron-phosphate through Eni Storage Systems, a company of Eni Industrial Evolution and Fib (Seri Industrial group). The batteries in question will be mainly intended for storage systems (Bess) which support the diffusion of renewable energy and the stability of electricity grids.

In an area of the Versalis industrial plant, once used for the storage of polymers and other industrial activities that have long since been abandoned, a celebration was held on Monday, in the presence of the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso and local authorities, the ceremony of laying of the first stone of the first integrated hub for the production of stationary batteries.

These systems, Eni underlines in a note, "accumulate the energy produced by renewable sources in moments of excess production and release it when necessary, and are therefore essential for managing the intermittency of renewable sourcesEuropean demand is estimated to grow approximately fourfold from 36 Gigawatt hours in 2025 to around 138 GWh in 2030.

Eni and the Brindisi gigafactory

According to the Eni Storage System development plan, the gigafactory for the p will be built in Brindisiproduction of battery cells and modules and the ibattery pack assembly plant (BESS), the latter with increased capacity, such as to also assemble the modules coming from the Seri Industrial gigafactory in Teverola (Caserta).

In the second phase, to complete the project, the following will also be carried out in the Apulian city: cathode active material production activity (Lfp) and of rbattery cycle, both sized for the two gigafactories. The project includes a coverall capacity of 16 GWh/year by 2030 (half of which in Brindisi and half in the Teverola plant), equal to over 10% of the European market for stationary storage (BESS).

Ricci: "Eni is entering a new business with high growth potential."

“Today in Brindisi we are launching an industrial initiative that represents Eni's entry into a completely new business with high growth potential. project that aims to support the transition, creating industrial and technological value, in a key sector for the decarbonisation process, because it integrates the development of renewable energy with the resilience of the energy system", commented Giuseppe Ricci, Eni's Chief Operating Officer for Industrial Transformation, speaking of “an investment that will give life to an innovative local supply chain, capable of generating employment and strategic autonomy with respect to non-EU markets, and of reducing emissions without losing competitiveness. Our industrial transformation model, which combines greater environmental sustainability, economic competitiveness, and energy security, is concrete. And it is complemented by the contextual Eni's entry into Faenix, the company of the Seri Industrial group that will market the storage systems produced in Teverola and Brindisi".

"Phases of profound transformation require courage, vision, and the ability to recognize when certain industrial models are no longer sustainable. And if the answer is an investment in an innovative, competitive business that is central to the global energy transition, we are proud to be part of it. When change is driven by a solid industrial vision, social responsibility, and the awareness that our country needs to work together as a system, then we are certain that this initiative will be an extraordinary development opportunity for Brindisi and Italy," he stated. Vittorio Civitillo, CEO of Seri Industrial and CEO of Faenix.
