From today – and the date of March 8th could not be more symbolic – there is a woman at the helm of the Consob: she is the Bocconi economist Clare Moscow, who takes on the role of deputy president while waiting for the political parties to reach an agreement on the future president after the exit from the scene, at the end of his mandate, of the president Paolo Savona.
It is not the first time that the regency of Consob has been entrusted to a woman: it had also happened with Anna Genovese. But this time it is different because the market needs a particularly serious, competent and above all independent referee after the alterations to the rules due to the forceful intervention of the Government in bank risk and in particular in the takeover bid of Unicredit on Banco Bpm and in the takeover bid of Monte dei Paschi on Mediobanca. And what's more, in the presence of an investigation by the Milan Public Prosecutor's Office on an alleged concert between Caltagirone e Milleri of Delfin which dates back to 2019 with decisive "support" from the CEO of MPS, Luigi Lovaglio, in recent days he was dismissed by the top management of the Sienese bank at Caltagirone's request.
This is enough to understand the importance of an independent Consob while politicians decide on a president for the next seven years. This decision, however, does not appear imminent and will likely be finalized after the referendum and beyond.
