Unioncamere: entrepreneurs under 35 are growing

Strong growth in young entrepreneurs in 2015. The under 35s opened 120 new businesses last year, 46 of which in the South (37% of the total). The closures, on the other hand, involved 53 thousand businesses of young people with a positive balance, therefore, for 66 thousand units. Without the contribution of the under 35s, the overall stock of businesses would have recorded a loss of 21 units.

An even more significant performance if one considers that young companies represent only 10,3% of the more than 6 million companies that make up the entrepreneurial base of our country (at the end of 2015 the companies of entrepreneurs under the age of 35
have in fact reached 623.755 units).

The entrepreneurial vitality of young Italians is recorded above all in the regions of the South, followed by the North-West (28 openings), the Center (500) and the North-East (25.812). In particular, Calabria (with 18.869%) is the region where in 40,9 the highest percentage contribution of young people to the creation of new businesses was recorded.

This is the portrait of youth entrepreneurship in 2015 that emerges from Movimprese, the survey conducted by Unioncamere-Infocamere on the basis of the Business Register of the Chambers of Commerce. All data is available at www.infocamere.it.

“Young people are demonstrating that they know how to play a decisive role in the growth of our productive fabric. The numerous new entrepreneurial realities under the age of 35 that we registered last year confirm this for us.” This is the comment of the president of Unioncamere, Ivan Lo Bello, according to whom “now it is necessary for these young business initiatives to be able to overcome the initial phase and establish themselves on the market. An objective to which the chamber system works to allow these promising realities to be born stronger and become great sooner".

The analysis by sector shows that in 2015 young entrepreneurs above all chose commerce (25.275 enrolments), construction (10.342), catering (6.598) and agriculture (5.478). However, the auxiliary activities of financial services (where 49,2% of new initiatives are due to the under 35s) and other personal services (46,3%) are characterized as more 'youthful' activities.

A significant contribution to the strong growth of youth businesses came from women and immigrant citizens in our country. From the
119.279 new entrepreneurial initiatives 'under 35', in fact, 36.416 (almost one out of three) refer to the control of women, while 29.188 (practically one out of four) are led by people born outside the national borders. Overall, the contribution of female entrepreneurship is 'worth' 28,9% of the entire growth of youth enterprises, while that of foreign enterprises stands at 27,8%.

A closer look at these numbers reveals how the importance of female entrepreneurship is felt above all in Abruzzo (35,6% of the regional balance), Valle d'Aosta (34,2%) and Molise (34%). As for foreigners, the greatest support given to the growth of 'under 35' businesses is recorded in Liguria (where 41,3% of all new youth initiatives have a foreign passport), Lombardy (38,4%) and Lazio (the 37,9%).

At a territorial level, after Crotone - as mentioned, leader in terms of concentration of youth enterprises out of the total number of enterprises in the area - the other Italian provinces with the greatest youth vocation are Vibo Valentia (15,9%), Reggio Calabria (15,5%) and Caserta (15,3%). In this ranking, the first province of central Italy is Frosinone (in 16th position, with 12,8% of companies led by 'under 35') while to find a northern province you have to scroll the ranking up to 32nd position, occupied by Novara with 11%. At the other end of the ranking, the provinces in which businesses led by young people are least present are Forlì-Cesena (last with only 7,2%), preceded on equal merit by Pordenone and Ravenna (7,3%).
