EU, Barroso rejects Franco-German proposal on economic governance

“The European Commission is the economic government of the Union. We absolutely don't need any other charges." The one that Jose Manuel Barroso reserves for the Franco-German proposal for a new economic governance of the euro area is a rejection without appeal.

Last month Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel had suggested setting up an economic government of the Eurozone to be entrusted to Herman van Rompuy, president of the European Council. The new institution would also refer to the national executives.

According to the president of the European Commission, who spoke today in front of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, the EU “needs more than ever the independent authority of the Commission. Governments cannot do it alone”. Barroso also believes that Europe's real problems "do not come from the community institutions", but from the crisis of confidence caused by the differences between the various countries.
