Uber paid a ransom to cover up a massive data theft

At the end of last year two hackers stole a mountain of data from Uber, who allegedly paid a ransom from 100mila U.S. dollars to stop the news from spreading.

Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of the chauffeur-driven rental app, admitted that at the end of 2016, two hackers stole Uber's data from 57 million users and 600 drivers. The theft does not include bank details or credit card numbers, but personal data such as names, emails and telephone and driving license numbers.

Khosrowshahi, who has been leading the group since August – after the sex scandal that led to the departure of the founder, Travis Kalanick – claims to have learned of the attack only recently.

The news of the ransom payment was reported by Bloomberg and Uber has not confirmed it. The company has yet to explain why it did not notify the police immediately after the incident.
