Tripadvisor in the Antitrust's crosshairs: after Expedia and Booking, still suspicious on travel sites

The Authority has launched an unfair commercial practice proceeding against Tripadvisor to verify whether the company adopts suitable measures to prevent and limit the risk of publishing false reviews on hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions.

Tripadvisor in the Antitrust's crosshairs: after Expedia and Booking, still suspicious on travel sites

After Expedia and Booking, also TripAdvisor ends up in the crosshairs ofAntitrust. I suspect the company – a travel web portal that posts user reviews of hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions – isn't doing enough to stop users from writing fake reviews.

"The Competition and Market Authority has decided to initiate proceedings for unfair commercial practice against Tripadvisor - writes the Authority in a note - to verify whether the company adopts suitable measures to prevent and limit the risk of posting fake reviews, both in terms of information and in relation to the registration procedures".

The decision was adopted "in the light of the numerous reports received from consumers - concludes the Antitrust -, from owners of tourist facilities (hotels, restaurants and other meeting places) and from the National Consumer Union Association".
