Courts: bankruptcies decrease (-20%) in the first half of 2022, but still 64 thousand pending procedures

Data from the Cherry Sea observatory on bankruptcy courts: new procedures decreasing throughout Italy, pending cases increasing only in Rome and Florence, Milan instead is first for closed cases

Courts: bankruptcies decrease (-20%) in the first half of 2022, but still 64 thousand pending procedures

In the first six months of 2022 they were enrolled in the Italian courts 3957 new bankruptcies, about 20% less than those opened in the same period of 2021. In addition, 7264 have been defined proceedings, a figure slightly lower than that of 2021 (-6%), and the stock was reduced to 64 thousand pending, a clear decrease (-11%) compared to the figure at the end of last year. From the end of 2019 to today, in particular, the volume of bankruptcies pending in Italian courts has been reduced by almost 23%.

This is what emerges from the survey of Cherry Sea, the observatory created by the fintech startup Cherry srl, which analyzed the trend of bankruptcies in 140 Italian courts as of 30 June 2022.

Cherry Sea's analysis therefore examines the activity of the top twenty bankruptcy sections by volume of activity, i.e. Bari, Bergamo, Bologna, Brescia, Busto Arsizio, Cagliari, Catania, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Modena, Monza, Naples , Padua, Rome, Turin, Treviso, Venice, Verona and Vicenza. In these courts, in the first half of the year, a total of 2014 proceedings were opened and 3465 were closed, approximately half of the respective national totals, and as at 30 June, the stock amounted to 29100 pending. 

Rome first court for new proceedings, Milan for closed cases

The first court by number of new proceedings is Roma with 387, however more than 50% lower than in the first half of 2021 (878); they follow Milano with 317 (-60% compared to June 2021) e Catania with 138 (-45%). At the bottom of the standings there are instead Treviso (38) Bust Arsizio (36) and Cagliari (35). In general, for all twenty courts in these six months there has been a decrease in new cases opened compared to the first half of 2021. As for finalized cases, the first court in Italy is Milan, which completed 709 cases in the half-year , however a much lower figure (-44%) than in the first half of 2021. Followed by Rome with 353 (-53%) and Bergamo with 225 (-43%). The sections that have closed fewer proceedings, however, are Modena with 89 (-60%), GenoVa with 79 (-43%) and Florence with 74 (-71%). 

Treviso the most efficient court, stock increasing only in Rome and Florence

The Tuscan capital and Rome are the only two courts among the top twenty to close fewer proceedings than have been opened: a FlorenceIn particular, as at 30 June 128 proceedings had been opened, for a Clearance Rate (ratio between completed proceedings and supervening proceedings) equal to -42%. The court, however, with the highest Clearance Rate value is Treviso (260%), followed by Padova (200%) and Cagliari (194%). The mean CR of the twenty courts is 103%.

Florence and Rome are also the only two sections that have seen their stock increase, which stands respectively at 1530 pending (+3%) and 5066 (+0,6%); the courts, on the other hand, which had the greatest impact on their backlog are Bergamo, which reduced it by almost 10% compared to the end of 2021, bringing it to 976 pending, Treviso (887, equal to -8,5%) and Vicenza (839, equal to -8%). On average, in the first twenty Italian courts the stock was reduced by 4,5%.

The regional pendant map

The courts with the largest stock as of 30 June 2022 are Rome (5066), Milan (3993) and Bari (1802). The regions, on the other hand, in which the greatest number of pending employees are concentrated are Lombardia (11234) Lazio (8403) and Campania (6578); vice versa, the more “unloaded” ones are Basilicata (721) Trentino-Alto Adige (615) and Molise (342). Territorially, 26% of the stock is distributed in the Centro Italy, for 24% al South, for 23% in the northwest, for 15% in the North East coast and for the remaining 12% in Islands.
