2025 begins with great news for Trenitalia's Regional service. With an investment of 850 million euros, the plan includes the introduction of 100 new trains, destined to serve over 430 million travellers

One hundred new regional trains in 2025, for an economic investment of 850 million euros and over 430 million estimated travellers. In numbers, 2025 for Trenitalia's Regional opens under the banner of growth in line with what is foreseen by the FS Italiane Group Strategic Plan 2025-2029.

“Thanks to the service contracts with the Regions and Autonomous Provinces, the clients of the service, 2024 new-generation trains were delivered in 540, which, added to the 335 already purchased previously, brings the number of new trains in circulation to 875. This number is destined to grow since, with the further deliveries planned up to 2027, Regionale will be able to count on 1.061 new trains, equal to 80% of the entire renewed fleet, for a total investment of seven billion euros”, reads a note from FS.

Trenitalia: what's new in 2025

Among the main ones new effective from January, automatic compensation for those who have purchased the Regional Digital Ticket: in the event of a train delay, passengers will automatically receive – without having to make any kind of request – compensation for the delay within 30 days. Furthermore, the new edition of “X-GO”, the loyalty program that, after the success of 2024 closed with over a million members, this year will allow you to accumulate points more easily since two will be assigned for every euro spent on travel. Finally, the “Regional Travel” initiative in collaboration with Lonely Planet and dedicated to the Italian landscapes to be discovered with the Regional Line connections. This is a guide that explores five itineraries (Tuscany Line, Trasimeno Line, Trabocchi Line, Salento Line and Taormina Line) that offer food and wine and nature experiences in typical Lonely Planet style, to be reached comfortably by train also thanks to the Promo Italia in Tour which, in its 3 and 5 day variants, allows unlimited travel on Trenitalia trains.

Jubilee 2025: Metrebus tickets on App and new Leonardo Express routes

On the occasion of the Jubilee 2025, to facilitate the travel of pilgrims who will reach Rome, has been activated, in collaboration with Attack, the Metrebus ticket sales on the Trenitalia App, to travel on public transport in the Capital and its metropolitan area. In addition, new services have been added new rides al Leonardo Express with departures from Rome Termini until 23:35 and from Fiumicino Airport until 00.23. In 2024, there were 415 million passengers on the Regional train, 8 million more than the previous year. About 45% of the total passengers chose the Regional train for leisure and tourism reasons. The intermodal connections of service Regional Link – train+bus and/or train+ship – reaching around 200 throughout Italy, for an even more widespread service capable of reaching even the places where the train does not arrive. Furthermore, 2024 saw a greater use of the Digital ticket, which today represents 43% of single-journey tickets sold and allows you to receive travel information in real time. Finally, the activation of Tap&Tap – the new payment system, fast and digital – which, after Veneto, has also been introduced along the routes that connect with the airports (Fiumicino, Turin, Cagliari and Palermo) and on the Florence-Pisa-Livorno and Turin-Bardonecchia lines.
