Terna: electricity demand down in 2014

According to Terna's data, 2014, with the same calendar (two fewer working days) and temperatures (milder winter and cooler summer) was marked by a drop in electricity demand: -2,1% compared to 2013 – The most relevant declines in the North-West and in Sicily.

According to the first provisional data processed by Terna, in 2014 the demand for electricity on the same calendar and temperature recorded a drop of 2,1% compared to 2013. Not considering the combined effect of the calendar (two working days less) and temperature (milder winter and cooler summer), the 309,0 demand of 2014 billion kilowatt-hours corresponds to a decrease of 3%.

At the territorial level, the most significant decreases are recorded in Lombardy (-6,4%), in the North-West macro-area (-4,4%) which includes Liguria, Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta, and in Sicily (-3,4, 2014%). In 85,9, 14,1% of the demand for electricity was met with domestic production and the remainder (267,6%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (4,0 billion kWh) decreased by 2013% compared to 9,8. The sources of photovoltaic (+7,4%), hydroelectric (+4,2%) production increased , geothermal (+1,0%) and wind (+9,7%); thermoelectric sources are down (-XNUMX%).

Overall, the production of hydroelectric, photovoltaic, wind and geothermal sources reached 102 billion kWh (compared to 95 billion kWh in 2013), equal to 38% of net national production. Instead, as regards the month of December 2014, the demand for electricity decreased by 2,9%, at the same temperature, compared to the same month of the previous year. Excluding the adjustments for temperature – almost one degree Celsius more than in December 2013 – and with the same number of working days (20), the request of 25,6 billion kWh corresponds to a drop of 3,4%.

Of the 25,6 billion kWh required in December 2014, 44,65% is distributed in the North, 30,4% in the Center and 25,0% in the South. At a territorial level, the demand for energy electricity in December 2014 was negative everywhere: -3,5% in the North, -2,8% in the Center and -3,6% in the South. In December 2014, the demand for electricity was satisfied for 85,0 .15,0% with domestic production and for the remaining portion (22,0%) from the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (5,2 billion kWh) fell by 2013% compared to December 5,8. In particular, hydroelectric (+9,4%), geothermal (+ 37,0%) and wind (+10,8%). On the other hand, thermal (-2,2%) and photovoltaic (-2014%) sources were down. In quarterly terms, the seasonally adjusted change in electricity demand in December 2014 compared to the previous month (November 0,9) was down by XNUMX%. The trend profile remains negative.
