Terna: electricity consumption down by 9,2% in June. The installed capacity of renewables is growing

The recovery of hydroelectric production and the growth of photovoltaics continue thanks to the higher rainfall recorded in June and the increase in new installations

Terna: electricity consumption down by 9,2% in June. The installed capacity of renewables is growing

Even in June, Italians consumed less electricity than in 2022. According to data from Terna, in June the electricity demand in Italy it was equal to a total of 25,4 billion kWh, a decrease of 9,2%. The weight of the renewables which produced a total of 11,3 billion kWh, covering 44,3% of electricity demand (against 35% in June 2022) thanks to the recovery of production hydroelectric. Industrial consumption also decreased, recording a reduction of 5,8% compared to June last year. The change in the transport and food sectors was positive, while all the other sectors, especially chemicals, had negative changes.

Terna: strong increase in installed wind and photovoltaic capacity

La installed capacity from the source wind e PV in Italy it reached 39,5 Gw in June. Considering all renewable sources, in the first half of 2023 the increase in capacity in Italy is equal to almost 2,5 Gw, a value higher by about 1,4 Gw (+120%) compared to the same period of 2022. In the last 18 monthly installations of new renewable capacity have substantially increased fivefold, going from 110 MW per month in January 2022 to almost 500 MW per month in June 2023.

Electricity consumption: comparison between 2023 and 2022

From the comparison between the first half of 2023 and the same period of 2022, substantial differences emerge. The demand for electricity in Italy is down by 5,3% (-4,3% the adjusted figure), also a negative change in the Imcei Index (prepared by the company, which examines the industrial consumption of around 1.000 companies energy-intensive), equal to -6,4%, and thermoelectric production (-16,6%). On the other hand, the production of energy from renewable sources (+4,3%) and the import figure (+17,6%) increased.

In detail, June had the same number of working days (21) and one temperature monthly average lower by as much as 2,3°C compared to June 2022, which led to a reduction in consumption for cooling estimated at around 1,3 TWh. The figure for electricity demand, seasonally adjusted and adjusted for the effect of temperature, is therefore down by 4,9%. At the territorial level, the trend change for June 2023 was negative everywhere: -8,8% al North part, -10% al Centro and -9,6% al South e Islands.

In quarterly terms, the value of electricity demand, seasonally adjusted and adjusted for the temperature effect, is substantially stable (+0,1%) compared to May 2023. Overall in the second quarter of 2023, the seasonally adjusted demand figure decreased by 1,4 .XNUMX% compared to the first quarter.

Renewables: the recovery of hydroelectric production continues

In June 2023, 87,3% of the Italian electricity demand was met with domestic production and the remainder (12,7%) with the balance of electricity exchanged with foreign countries. Net national production amounted to 22,3 billion kWh, down by 7,9% compared to June 2022. The renewables covered 44,3% of electricity demand, the production of which was divided as follows: 43,5% water, 31,4% PV, 12,1% biomass, 9,2% Aeolian, 3,8% geothermal.

The recovery of production from water sources and the growth of photovoltaics benefited from the greater rainfall and the increase in installed capacity of approximately 3,8 Gw compared to June 2022. Production from thermal source (-22%) ed wind (-19,1%); slightly increasing production geothermal (+1,6%). For what concern import-export balance, the change is equal to -17,2% due to a combined effect of the decrease in imports (-12,7%) and the increase in exports (+97,5%).
