Terna: the demand for electricity falls, -4% in February

According to the data recorded by Terna, in the month of February the electricity demand in Italy showed a decrease of 4% - The effects of the milder temperature weigh heavily on the calculation: 4,5 degrees Celsius more than last year February – 82.% of electricity demand was met with national production.

Calano i electricity consumption in Italy. In February, in fact, the electricity required, equal to 24,9 billion kWh, recorded a decrease of 4% on an annual basis. In the calculation, however, the climate weighed heavily, much milder than last February: the average monthly temperature was 4,5 degrees Celsius higher. Adjusted for the effects of temperature, the variation in electricity demand settles at -1,9%.

Of the 24,9 billion kWh required in February 2014, 47,5% is distributed in the North, 28,6% in the Center and 23,9% in the South. At a territorial level, the change in demand of electricity was broken down in different ways: -3,0% in the North, -4,0% in the Center and -6,0% in the South.

The demand for electricity was met for 82,1% with national production and for the remainder (17,9%) with the balance of energy exchanged with foreign countries. In detail, net national production (20,7 billion kWh) fell by 5% on an annual basis. Hydro (+42,3%), geothermal (+5,6%) and wind (+11,3%) production sources are growing. The thermoelectric source decreased (-16,1%), while photovoltaic production remained substantially stable (+0,2%).

Compared to the month of January, electricity demand in February fell by 1,3%. In the first two months of 2014, the demand for electricity decreased by 4% on an annual basis.
