Time's up, the Quirinale is now in the field of elections

Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni went up to the Quirinale around 15 pm. The procedural machine is set in motion that will lead the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella to the dissolution of the Chambers and to the elections. Expected date March 4th.

Time's up, the Quirinale is now in the field of elections

After the year-end press conference, iPrime Minister Paolo Gentiloni has risen to the Quirinale. An interview that lasted almost an hour during which the Prime Minister declared his government mission concluded.

In the afternoon, the Head of State met with the presidents of the Senate and of the Chamber, Pietro Grasso e Laura Boldrini. Now, on the basis of the provisions of the Constitution (article 88), the drafting of the decree dissolving Parliament is awaited. The provision will then be sent to the outgoing premier, who will have to countersign it.

Today, December 28, therefore, the XVII legislature ends and the electoral phase begins, with the vote scheduled for March 4.

It was Gentiloni himself, at a press conference, who expressed his regret for not being able to enact the law on ius soli, but there were no numbers in Parliament. And you need to take note of it. “The best way to dismiss the Ius soli for many years – he commented – would have been to have it rejected in Parliament”.

The direction now passes to Sergio Mattarella who, having verified the impossibility of proceeding with the current Parliament, will in all probability sign the decree dissolving the Chambers on 31 December today.

To complete and close the day, the council of ministers will meet (around 18,30) to fix the date of the electionswhich must take place between 45 and 75 days from the dissolution of the Chamber and Senate. It is up to the government to indicate the day: but the date now appears certain, 4 March 2018. The CDM will also indicate the date of the first meeting of the new Chambers, presumably 23 March.

From here to the elections, the Gentiloni Government will continue to take care of ordinary administration and current affairs. The official resignations will in fact arrive at the formation of the new chambers (end of March).
