Tecla, the 3D house inspired by potter wasps in Ravenna

The Cucinella architecture studio, in collaboration with the 3D technology company Wasp, has designed the first completely eco-sustainable 3D house.

Tecla, the 3D house inspired by potter wasps in Ravenna

The first 100% circular house arrives in Massa Lombarda, in the province of Ravenna: it's called TECLA and it's 3D printed (through the new Crane technology of the Italian company WASP) by the Mario Cucinella architecture studio, using only reusable and recyclable materials, collected from the local soil. The experiment is a candidate to lead the necessary construction revolution in the coming years, given that a United Nations report published in 2017 estimates that the world population of 7.6 billion will reach 11.2 billion in 2100, and already in 2030 around 5 billion people will live in cities. Consequently, one of the challenges of the near future are alternative housing solutions, to redefine the very concept of the city.

In this sense, TECLA is the first project of this type in Italy, the first built using multiple collaborative Crane WASP (acronym for World's Advanced Saving Project) printers simultaneously and using materials recovered from the area in a self-sufficient way. “Together with WASP – commented Mario Cucinella – we want to develop an innovative prototype of 3D printed habitat that responds to the increasingly urgent climate revolution and to the needs of the changes dictated by the needs of the communities. We need a paradigm shift in the field of architecture that comes closer to people's needs and that, in the earth, finds an answer for the Earth".

“WASP – added the CEO Massimo Moretti – takes inspiration from the potter wasp. We create 3D printed homes using land at Km0 with a view to sustainability. The oldest material and the most advanced technology come together to give new hope to the world. One year ago GAIA was born, the first 3D printed house entirely in raw earth. Today with our partners we are building TECLA an entire eco-sustainable habitat printed in 3D. The planet calls us to a common project that we have shared with Mario Cucinella”.
