Street Food: now even the chefs try their hand at street food

Street food is attracting more and more enthusiasts, if obviously it is of high quality. In recent times, street food has in fact become a fun alternative to traditional eating in restaurants and trattorias: it is more trendy and, where possible, enriches the lunch break with conviviality and life in the open air.

Proof of this is the Gambero Rosso Guide to Street Food presented during the Milano Marketing Festival which this year recorded 550 recommendations, over 100 more than in the previous edition, a sign of the explosion of a sector which, between festivals, food markets and events, knows no bounds. The guide, divided by regions, tells the specialties of the places and the most characteristic itineraries of recipes and ingredients that in our country are rooted in the history and culture of the communities.
And that eating on the street is now fashionable is also attested by the fact that famous chefs enjoy inventing pop signs and have taken to experimenting with "street" preparations. The special Street Food award for Chefs was established for them: among the Regional Champions, awarded by the guide, here is Niko Romito with "Alt" in Castel di Sangro (AQ), Tony Lo Coco with "Unetto" in Bagheria (PA) and Peppe Guida with “La Devozione” in Naples.
Renewed attention is paid to food trucks, the itinerant food administration businesses, a sector at the center of great growth: according to a survey by Unioncamere/InfoCamere, drawn up on the basis of the Business Register, between 2013 and 2018, api car , kiosks, trucks have risen to 2792 businesses, about a thousand more than five years earlier, with Lombardy at the top of the ranking with 389 businesses, followed by Puglia and Lazio. Factor to underline: the protagonists of the phenomenon, 1 out of 5, are young people under 35.
The Street Food on the Road award is dedicated to the best itinerant proposal and the food trucks, selected for the quality of the proposal, are positioned at the beginning of each region, so as to make it easier to read the guide.
Also this year the Gambero Rosso Street Food guide elects 20 new regional champions.
«Street Food represents a very important heritage for Italian food and wine» says Paolo Cuccia, President of Gambero Rosso «Street food is rooted in our traditions, it is part of our cultural heritage. Today it is experiencing a real renaissance thanks to the great attention to quality products linked to the territories and the constant growth in demand from Italian and foreign tourists.»
