The new public digital identity system is underway - For the moment, around 300 services are available from 14 administrations - Here's how to obtain credentials.

Spid at the start: guide to the new digital identity

The new public digital identity system (Spid) makes its debut today, Tuesday 15 March, which will allow citizens and businesses to access all the online services of the public administrations and adhering businesses with unique credentials. Therefore, the dozens of passwords, keys and codes needed today to use online services will disappear.

WHAT IT'S FOR

From taxation to health via social security, there are currently 300 services available and accessible through Spid, but they will rise to 600 by June. From any device, the system guarantees "security, privacy and protection of personal data", writes the government in a note.

Here is the list of the first 14 administrations that adhere to Spid:

- Inland Revenue

- Equitalia

- INPS

- Inail

- City of Florence

- town of Venice

- Municipality of Lecce

- The Tuscan Regional Authority

- Liguria region

- Emilia Romagna region

- Friuli Venezia Giulia Region

- Lazio region

- Piedmont region

- Umbria Region

The government aims to release 6 million unique PINs by 2016 and to ensure that the entire public administration adheres to the new system in the next two years.

HOW TO GET IT

To request the release of digital identity, it is possible to contact InfoCert (connected to the Chambers of Commerce), Poste Italiane or Tim (which operates through the subsidiary TI Trust Technologies), but in the future the authorized providers will increase.

- infocert

Following the instructions posted on the page https://identitadigitale.infocert.it Spid identity can be obtained through recognition via webcam (for 15 euros) or with a digital signature, National Services Card or electronic Identity Card. It is also possible to go in person to an Infocert office, but at the moment this possibility is limited to the Municipalities of Rome, Milan and Padua.

- Poste Italiane

The procedure for obtaining Spid identity directly online is indicated on the Poste Italiane website. Alternatively, Poste also issues digital identity in 360 offices. In the future, the service will be extended to the entire network and it will be possible to receive the credentials at home by postman (but the additional service will not be free).

- Tim

You need to register on www.nuvolastore.it, but only if you are in possession of at least one of the National Services Card, digital signature or Electronic Identity Card. By the end of the year, Tim will also make it possible to obtain identity in some shops, against any form of identity document.

THREE LEVELS OF SECURITY

Those wishing to use the service must bear in mind that the Spid identity consists of credentials with different characteristics based on the level of security required for access. There are three levels of security, each of which corresponds to three different levels of Spid identity. Citizens and businesses can decide independently or ask any digital identity manager for the level of Spid credentials that best suits their needs.

The first level allows authentication via ID and password established by the user, while the second allows access using a traditional password plus a "one time password" generated on the spot and sent to the user (as is used in many online banking) . Finally, the third level involves the use of a password and a smart card.

This does not mean that the citizen can adopt different Spid identities, possibly with different levels of security or provided by different managers, using from time to time the most convenient one on a single occasion. On the other hand, at any time the user can also cancel the identity obtained without providing any explanation. Credentials not used for 24 consecutive months, on the other hand, are automatically revoked by the manager.
