Spain, almost 5 million unemployed

The unemployment rate increased by 3 percentage points in the third quarter of the year compared to the previous one, reaching a record of 21,52%: the highest value without work since 1996. In three weeks the Spaniards will go to vote.

Spain, almost 5 million unemployed

There is no sign of decreasing unemployment in Spain. In the third quarter of 2011, the number of unemployed reached 4 million 978 thousand, almost 150 thousand more than the previous quarter. The unemployment rate thus stands at 21,52%, a record not seen since 1996. 

Among the various sectors, between July and September, the one in which there was a greater increase in unemployment was that of services, which saw an increase of more than 45 thousand workers left without a job. The construction sector follows, with 26 more unemployed and agriculture with 7.400 farmers left without a permanent job. 

So the theme of the "desmpleo" will be one of the most popular in this electoral campaign. The November 20 the candidate Mariano Rajoy of the Partido Popular will challenge the socialist Alfredo Perez Rucalcaba.
