Snam turns 75 and looks to the future of energy and natural gas

The company met all its stakeholders as part of the event held in Milan at the National Museum of Science and Technology - Presentation of a book edited by Paolo Mieli on the role of gas in energy scenarios and an exhibition focused on the "technological brain" of gas network - The CEO of Alverà: "Gas will have a central role in the green economy"

Snam met all its stakeholders - starting with a representation of its approximately 2.000 suppliers and continuing with customers and industrial partners, employees, academics, the media, investors and representatives of national and international institutions - in a day of reflection and analysis on the future of energy and natural gas on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the company. The event was held at the National Museum of Science and Technology in Milan.

At the initiative, invited by the president of Snam Carlo Malacarne and the managing director Marco Alvera`, the following spoke, among others: the president of the Authority for Energy, Gas and the Water System Guido Bortoni, the head of the Police Franco Gabrielli, the vice president of the European Commission for the Energy Union Maros? S?efc?ovic?, the president of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti Claudio Costamagna, the managing director of Saipem Stefano Cao, the managing director of Terna Luigi Ferraris, the Chief Gas & Lng Marketing and Power Officer of Eni Massimo Mantovani, l ex president of Snam Alberto Meomartini, the head of the energy program of the Istituto Affari Internazionali Nicolo` Sartori and professor Jonathan Stern, director of gas research at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies.

The event was characterized by a plenary session held in the morning with two round tables on the importance of infrastructure and dialogue with the local area and on the new uses of gas in terms of technological innovation and in a perspective of decarbonisation and quality improvement ` of the air. In the afternoon, however, a series of thematic discussion tables were held on environmental sustainability, safety, ethics and transparency, networks, sustainable mobility, business internationalization and regulation.

“The name Snam is closely linked to the industrial history of our country – declared the president of Snam Carlo Malacarne – and is recognized throughout Italy as a synonym of competence and reliability. The ability to put our talent at the service of the community and to maintain a constant dialogue with the territories have been and will be the keys to our success. We are convinced that the values that have allowed Snam to grow in these first 75 years are the same ones that will allow us to project ourselves into the medium-long term future".

“Today – commented the managing director of Snam Marco Alverà – we begin to lay the foundations for Snam in 2030. We are convinced that natural gas will play a central role in the green economy thanks to technologies that will make it increasingly sustainable and renewable. We are ready to seize this opportunity by leveraging our European leadership in infrastructure and excellent skills that we will enrich with research and development activities on decarbonisation. An essential component of our future are Snam's over 2.000 suppliers, with whom we will strengthen collaboration also through the new training activities of our Academy. We strongly believe in the value of the network between companies, thanks to which Snam already generates an overall economic impact in Italy of more than 3 billion euros a year, directly and indirectly supporting more than 17 jobs".

During today's meeting, Snam developed an integrated communication project entitled “Re-Source”, consisting of a book and an exhibition on natural gas in the future of energy. The volume, published by Rizzoli and edited by the journalist and historian Paolo Mieli and by the economist and energy expert Daniela Viglione, retraces in about 150 pages full of illustrations and captions the history, present and prospects of natural gas, from the methanization of Italy to the internationalization of Snam up to the geopolitical and technological scenarios.

The exhibition, inaugurated today together with the general director of the National Museum of Science and Technology Fiorenzo Galli, revolves around the so-called "synoptic picture" of the national gas pipeline network, the "brain" of the gas transport system, used by Snam for about 30 years and then, after its recent replacement with new high-tech equipment, donated to the Museum. The exhibition will be open until January 6, 2018.

Both the book and the exhibition highlight the fundamental role that natural gas plays in the global decarbonization process, as well as current and future technological developments that can allow methane to become a renewable and potentially eternal source.
