Smart City, Engineering leading the Geyser consortium

The objective of the international research consortium Geyser (Green networked Data Centers as energy prosumers in smart city environment) is the creation of a technological and business framework that allows next generation data centers to interact with the energy infrastructures of smart cities.

Smart City, Engineering leading the Geyser consortium

With the guidance of the international research consortium Geyser (Green networked Data Centers as energy prosumers in smart city environment) Engineering aims to confirm its leadership in cloud services by focusing this time on the energy efficiency of its data centres.

Geyser's goal is the creation of a technological and business framework that allows next generation data centers to interact with the energy infrastructures of smart cities, through exchanges of electricity and heat. Therefore, an active contribution to the achievement of the energy efficiency objectives of smart cities is the expected result of the project (5 million investment is foreseen) also in line with the growing attention from Community policies on the reduction of the environmental impact of human activities.

"The fundamental motivation of the initiative" - claims Massimo Bertoncini of Engineering, coordinator of the project - "lies in the observation that data centers can be considered as important players capable of offering consumption flexibility to support the need to reduce energy consumption of smart cities.” In fact, compared to the autonomous solutions adopted so far at a local level (data center, building, apartment), with Geyser the research will aim at a systemic approach, based on the coordination of consumption and cooperation between energy suppliers and individual consumers, with consequent energy savings superior.

As prime contractor, Engineering is responsible for the entire life cycle of the Energy Management System platform, from the collection of user requirements to the design of the architectural solution, to the development and validation of the proposed solution through a trial to be carried out in the data center of Pont Saint Martin. The Geyser consortium is made up of 10 top-level industrial, academic and institutional European partners from six different countries (Italy, Ireland, Greece, Spain, Switzerland, Romania).
