Skype and Whatsapp, EU crackdown

Skype and Whatsapp, EU crackdown

The European Commission prepares to crack down on Skype and WhatsApp and other online communications services. The objective of Brussels, in fact, is to propose a reform of the rules on telecommunications aimed on the one hand at protecting the privacy and safety of the consumer and, on the other, at avoiding the risk of a "distortion of competition".

The aim is to limit the differences between the offers of traditional operators and those of internet companies which, being free, often end up taking over. Text messages via Whatsapp or calls via Skype are now increasingly widespread, to the detriment of the traditional telephony business, in what risks becoming a form of unfair competition from the giants of the web.

The Commission, therefore, would be studying how to adapt the EU rules applied to traditional operators to this different competitive context, to include these adjustments in the reform of EU telecommunications which will be presented in September.
