Sanlorenzo yacht recognized as a world pioneer for sustainability. Carbon free ever closer

This year the hydrogen boat for the Ameica Cup will be launched. In 2024 the 50-meter will arrive with low environmental impact services on board. The objectives in the “Road to 2030” strategy will be achieved

Sanlorenzo yacht recognized as a world pioneer for sustainability. Carbon free ever closer

Saint Lawrence, thanks to yacht projects ready to be launched has received a Dusseldorf recognition as first player in the world in the field of sustainability. Only the details are missing and Sanlorenzo will be able to launch early next year a 50m yacht, the 50Steel, whose on-board services (which normally make up around 85% of the consumption of a boat of this kind) will be powered by a very low environmental impact, thanks to the innovative and exclusive technologies developed with Siemens Energy. The title a Business Square, which gained 8,04% in the last month, this morning it lost 0,26% to 38,95 euros.

Sanlorenzo receives global recognition for sustainability

Precisely thanks to these innovations, which can be mounted on boats from 24 to 80 metres, San Sorenzo has recently received, on the occasion Boot Dusseldorf, the "Sustainability Excellence Award 2022”: “The Sanlorenzo Group can be considered pioneer in the path of responsible development".

In 2023 Sanlorenzo is Project Partner of the Blue Innovation Dock, the Boot Düsseldorf platform that collects voices e projects dedicated to sustainability, priorities of the future not only of yachting.
“Despite it yachting affects only 0,22% of the total GHG emissions of the entire shipping sector, (according to the International Maritime Organization, 2020)" says Sanlorenzo, "the introduction of innovations and technologies to reduce the environmental impact of yachts is taking a an increasingly central role in the activity plan of the Research and Development department of the Sanlorenzo Group”.

What will be the characteristics of the 50Stell, at sea in 2024

We are currently proceeding with the component definition of the complete system e at the beginning of 2024 it will come installed on board of first 50Steel unit in the Sanlorenzo shipyard of La Spezia with new technologies Siemens.
As explained by Massimo Perotti, managing director of Sanlorenzo, the innovative system devised by Siemens provides for the connection of “a reformer with which methanol is transformed into hydrogen, the latter goes into a fuel cell which in turn chemically produces electricity and the residue is not more CO2, but water vapour”. The 50Steel will be equipped “with these fuel cells and methanol reformers which will be used to supply energy to the yacht's hotel industry” the CEO told Firstonline.

It will be the first step towards carbon free for the entire nautical industry

This decidedly innovative application will represent the concrete first step in power generation carbon neutral originated from new generation fuels (E-methanol and bio-methanol) for theentire nautical industry, says San Lorenzo.

Towards the application of the reformer/fuel cell also in navigation

At the same time Sanlorenzo is already thinking about a second step: the development of a carbon neutral energy generation system, which provides for a substantial increase in the power developed by the reformer/fuel cell modules. This will make navigation possible at low speed and wide range in carbon neutrality conditions, through the system hybrid propulsion, overcoming the current limits of the systems, which in zero emission mode (main engines and generators off) can only count on the modest energy capacity of the batteries.

It will also be a revolution in the configuration of boats

This second step will require a technological leap also in structure and plant configuration of the yacht. The engineers of the R&D Department and the technical office of Sanlorenzo together with Lloyd's Register will face this challenge by focusing on the development of capacious structural tanks suitable for the new fuel. These will be compatible with confined spaces available on board and will take into account the stringent regulations currently applied to large vessels for the transport of methanol.

The final goal for Sanlorenzo foresees a third step even more ambitious: the design and construction of a superyacht powered solely by green methanol. The generation of the power necessary for the navigation at maximum speed it will therefore no longer be linked to Diesel diesel engines, but will be based on one combination of fuel cells and internal combustion engines powered by green methanol.

This year the launch of the hydrogen pilot vessel for the America's Cup

The subsidiary of San Lorenzo Bluegame in parallel it is developing the BGH and BGM65HH projects which will be launched respectively in summer 2023 and in summer 2025. The BGH was chosen by the New York Yacht Club as a "chase boat" to flank American Magic during the 37th edition of the America's Cup to be held in Barcelona in 2024. BGH will fly at 50 knots on foil pushed by one pure hydrogen propulsion, therefore zero emissions exactly like the very fast racing boat which will accompany, but no wind needed.
Thanks to this result and focusing on the design capacity in the use of thehydrogen in propulsion, Bluegame with an agreement with Volvo Penta, will install the new pilot system di hybrid IPS propulsion, which will come combined with hydrogen fuel cells developed starting from the “chase boat” project for the America's Cup. The model will welcome this technology BGM65HH (hydrogen hybrid). The Sanlorenzo Group, comforted by the progress of the projects in progress, is confident that its objectives in the strategy "Road to 2030”, although very ambitious, will be achieved.
