Il mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, announced that he also intends to stand in the next municipal elections in the Lombard capital. "I am applying to obtain your trust in order to lead a new transformation of Milan - said the mayor in an almost five-minute video published on his social channels - As you can understand from my words, I am not applying therefore to complete the job, but to start a new phase which will be difficult, tiring but also (I am convinced) which will bring Milan back to being a city of inspiration for our country, for Europe and for the world”.
Even the center-left parties now almost assumed that Sala would communicate his decision at the beginning of 2021. The mayor had postponed the announcement several times, underlining how the priority, at this moment, was to devote every single energy to getting Milan back out of the Covid emergency.
Then, right on the day in which Sant'Ambrogio is celebrated, patron of the city, Sala has lifted the reservation: “I'm ready, it's up to you to decide – he added – In these difficult months I have had the opportunity to reflect on what it means to administer the Milanese community politically. A reflection that was intertwined with the awareness of knowing and having to make a decision regarding my possible re-nomination. On several occasions I stressed that I wanted to be totally sure that I had the physical and mental energies necessary to commit myself for another 5 years. Now I feel that I can, indeed I want to, do it. This is why I decided, at the end of this long reflection, to run again for mayor of Milan".
