Electricity consumption also restarts: +21,7%

The figure recorded by Terna in April also exceeds that of 2019, and above all consumption by large-scale industry is growing significantly: +60% compared to April 2020, +6% compared to April 2019

Electricity consumption also restarts: +21,7%

There is a restart and it is also demonstrated by electricity consumption, which according to Terna in April grew by almost 22% compared to April 2020, when Italy was in total lockdown for the whole month, but also by 0,4% compared to April 2019, when they were at full capacity. Looking at the entire first quarter of this year, the figure was 7,2% higher than in 2020 (in working day adjusted values), down 1,4% compared to the first four months of 2019 and substantially stable if compared to March 2021. Last month in Italy the demand for electricity in Italy amounted to 24,3 billion kWh, and was 37% covered by renewable energy sources and 88% from national production. Net national production (21,7 billion kWh) recorded an increase of 11,5% compared to April 2020. As regards renewables, thermoelectric (+23,6%) and wind (+ 25,6%). Water sources (-12,5%), photovoltaic (-11%) and geothermal (-3,8%) decreased.

The data on electricity consumption for April was however influenced by the fact that this spring was significantly colder than last year: 1,5 °C less in April, compared to the previous April. At local level, the April trend was positive everywhere: +25,8% in the North, +20,2% in the Center and +14,6% in the South. Terna then elaborated the now usual IMCEI index on industrial consumption of around 530 so-called energy-intensive customers connected to the national electricity transmission grid (large industries in the 'cement, lime and plaster', 'steel and steel', 'chemistry', 'mechanics', 'means of transport', 'food', 'paper ', 'ceramics and glassware', 'non-ferrous metals'). In this case the recovery is even more evident, with +60% compared to April 2020, as well as +6% compared to April 2019. The steel, chemical, mechanical, construction materials and non-ferrous metals sectors are growing. On the other hand, the paper, food and means of transport sectors were down.
