Riccardo Muti in Paestum in concert for Syria

Riccardo Muti in Paestum in concert for Syria

On 5 July the event promoted by the Campania Region in memory of the victims of terrorism. The link between the Campania site and the war-destroyed city of Palmyra.

The setting, a stupendous valley, is among the most suggestive in Southern Italy. The master is among the best known in the world, an ambassador of culture and music. The temples of Paestum and Riccardo Muti meet, on July 5 they will be the protagonists of the "Concert for Syria - The ways of friendship". An event of openness to the world, to peace, to respect for territories and human beings, dedicated to the memory of the archaeologist Kahled al-Assad, superintendent of Palmyra in Syria and of Hevrin Khalaf, a Kurdish woman massacred by Isis. An appointment promoted by the Campania Region, whose President Vincenzo De Luca had announced it in the dark days of the lockdown.

Thanks to a less heavy health situation, the event was confirmed and with even broader objectives. Because it will serve to "relaunch the economy of our area, to give work to the world of culture that has suffered in these months of blockade", explained De Luca. The Region is, in fact, ready to spend 5 million euros to support cultural activitiesi with dozens of events in all the capitals of Campania. Widespread culture in contexts appreciated for their welcome and desire to recover, with protagonists, among others, the San Carlo Theater, the Giuseppe Verdi orchestra of the homonymous theater in Salerno, the Royal Palace of Caserta. Everything checked and in full safety conditions, they anticipated from the Region.

Maestro Muti's concert is the preview of a program that will continue throughout the summer. Muti will conduct the Luigi Cherubini Youth Orchestra with musicians from the Syrian Expat Philharmonic Orchestra. The Scabec - Regional Society for Cultural Heritage - coordinates the event supported not only by the Region, but also by the Salerno Chamber of Commerce, the Ravenna Festival, the Municipality of Capaccio, the Archaeological Park of Paestum and Velia. Proceeds from the evening will be donated to charity.

Il project "Le ways of friendship " of the Ravenna Festival, visit symbolic places of ancient and contemporary history. It discloses its human and civil dimension. Syria, unfortunately, is negativity, but not submission. For pain to have meaning, it has to teach us something, explains the organization. The culture becomes the preferred tool for see, hear, share the pain of others. A refined, wise journey which, in the setting of marvelous temples, does not forget the drama of millions of people to whom the world powers are unable to give a solution. The civil, artistic testimony also serves to stimulate those solutions that are wanted tomorrow.

Palmyra and Paestum they are twinnedand today both habitat of memories e beauties. The one "bride of the desert", a caravan city with a thousand stories, like that of Zenobia, who was its queen and claimed to be descended from Semiramis, Dido, Cleopatra; the other Greek colony dedicated to Poseidon, remembered by Virgil, Ovid and Propertius for the scent of its roses which bloomed twice a year, spring and autumn. Thus the announcement of the concert on July 5 summarizes two friendly cities. Two symbolic placesEquity shares  of humanity united now by the memory of the archaeologist Khaled Al-Asaad, long director of the Syrian site who fell victim to Isis. Maestro Muti with the young musicians will try to give voice to that work of guardian of the memory of an extraordinary locality, since 2015 mutilated of its temples by the self-proclaimed Islamic State. But "the ways of friendship" have not forgotten.
