Pirelli increasingly green: OK from the Science Based Targets Initiative to the 2025 climate objectives

Pirelli aims higher and higher and revises its objectives in the fight against climate change. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated the upgrade of the greenhouse gas emission reduction targets of the Italian multinational, which at the end of 2021 has achieved the previous targets validated by SBTi for Scopes 4 and 1, 2 years in advance .

The new objectives, proposed by Pirelli and approved by SBTi, envisage actions consistent with maintaining global warming "within 1,5°C", compared to the previous scenario which envisaged remaining "well below 2°C". In particular, SBTi - which defines and promotes best practices, based on scientific elements, for the reduction of emissions - has validated the Pirelli objectives of reducing absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 42% (Scopi 1 and 2) by 2025 compared to 2015 and a 9% decrease in those from raw materials purchased by 2025 compared to 2018 (Scope 3).

Marco Tronchetti Provera, CEO and executive vice president of Pirelli, commented: “The validation of even more ambitious targets on the reduction of greenhouse gases by the Science Based Targets initiative is an authoritative recognition of our commitment to the fight against 'climate change' which sees us engaged daily through our Research and Development for ever more efficient solutions along the entire value chain”.
