Piazza Affari snubs the Monetary Fund which cuts growth estimates and leaps to the top of Europe

The Spanish results of Mediaset and the leap of the banks make the Italian stock market soar (+2,04%) despite the Monetary Fund also cutting growth estimates for Italy (+0,3% in 2014) - Lists weaker Europeans – Ft bets on the Fiat-Peugeot merger – A Greek network for Terna – The approaching goal for the reform of the Senate also helps.

FIREWORKS IN THE MARKET PLACE, BANKS RECORDS. AZIMUTH FLAMES, MEDIASET TURN ON THE MEDIA 

Italian banks recover lost ground under the skies of the Espirito Santo crisis and the winds of war in Ukraine. As a consequence, the Italian Stock Exchange gallops: Fse Mib index +2,04% to 21.255 while the other European lists limit themselves to more modest gains. Only Madrid (+1,05%) partially holds the lead, London rises by 0,34%, Paris by 0,78% and Frankfurt by 0,42%.

Wall Street is little moved, but on the Nasdaq Facebook rises by 6%, to levels never seen in history after an exceptional quarter. At the sector level, the banks were the protagonists, the Stoxx sector index which brings together the most important European credit institutions shows an increase of 1,7%. 

Among the best are the Italian ones, in particular Banca Popolare dell'Emilia Romagna +6,5%: Kepler Cheuvreux has raised the rating to Buy from Hold, adjusting the target price to 7,40 euros from 7,01 euros. Equally brilliant in asset management Azimut +7%, which accelerated after the release of quarterly data. But the progress of the financial sector involves all the big names.  

Intesa Sanpaolo advances +3,5% on the wave of interest from Neuberger Berman and Coller Capital for the bank's private equity portfolio, an aggregate valued at 1,4 billion. Close behind is Unicredit +3,4%, preceded by Banco Popolare +4,5%. Even more impressive was the rush of Pop Milano +5%, Ubi Banca +5%, Monte dei Paschi (even +7%). Mediobanca +3%. Among insurance stocks, Generali +1,2%, UnipolSai +2,6%.

The day of records continues with the media, driven by Mediaset +6,5% thanks to the excellent accounts of Mediaset Espana closed the first half with an adjusted EBITDA up 58,6%, to 88,1 million euros. IlSole24Ore +6%, Rcs +3%, Triboo Media +4% also rose sharply in the sector. Mondadori +2%. Telecom Italia rises by 1,3%.

Fiat advances +2,1% among the denials: after the one relating to the negotiations with Volkswagen it is now the turn of Peugeot. Today the Financial Times wrote that there are ongoing negotiations in view of an aggregation with Peugeot: the dry no of the interested parties. The oil and utilities sectors are in the spotlight, at the center of Minister Pier Carlo Padoan's talks in Beijing. Eni goes up by 0,9%, Enel by 1,2%, Snam by 0,8%, Terna + 0,8%. Cassa Depositi e Prestiti announced this morning that it is about to sell 35% of Cdp Reti to the Chinese State Grid Corporation. Cdp Reti controls 30% of the two companies in the primary distribution of gas and electricity.
