Part "Outside": the Quadrennial of Rome at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni

The Rome Quadriennale returns to the Palazzo delle Esposizioni from 30 October 2020 to 17 January 2021. The XVII edition, entitled "Fuori" curated by Sarah Cosulich and Stefano Collicelli Cagol, aims to restore a new image of contemporary Italian art by proposing an innovative intergenerational and multidisciplinary path. Investigating the relationships between the different forms of art: dance, music, visual arts, theatre, cinematography, fashion, architecture and design.

The title "Out", wants to be an invitation to get out of the box, to have an out of the ordinary point of view, from clichés and conformism. Out of mind, Out of fashion, Out of time, Out of scale, Out of game, Out of everything, Out of place is what this 2020 edition wants to be: a alternative path in the reading of Italian art from the 60s to today. In detail, the exhibition touches on major themes such as sexuality, homosexuality, racial issues, feminism.

Therefore it is not a theme exhibition, but the event is based on three areas of research: the Palazzo (metaphor of the relationship between art and power starting from the venue), the Desire (seduction at the center of art), the immeasurable (the need of art to overcome the limits up to the unimaginable).

They are 43 artistsselected by the curators and presented through monographic rooms, rearrangements of existing works or new projects, for a total of over 300 works, in the 4 square meters interpreted and adapted by thearchitect Alessandro Bava. Plasterboard walls redesign the spaces of the Palazzo and its proportions, proposing a path capable of disorienting traditional perception.

Furthermore, Luke Scarlini -writer and storyteller- was invited to create a series of drilling appointments dedicated to the stories that emerged from his research of over a year among the materials of the ArBiQ, the Archive Library of the Quadriennale in Rome. Scarlini will intertwine, in an engaging and unexpected way, the history of Italian art with that of the Quadrennial, offering the visitor insights and connections in relation to the contemporary-

The result of three years of work characterized by research, meetings, analysis and study in a continuous comparison with the history of the institution. The past of the Quadriennale and its relationship with the city of Rome is also of great inspiration.

On the occasion, the Bank of Italy will carry out an extraordinary opening of the room that housed the entrance to the Tic-Tac Bar, the futurist venue decorated by Giacomo Balla and inaugurated in 1921 in via Milano, next to the Palazzo delle Esposizioni. The mural by Balla, discovered in 2018, is visible in the room.
