Horizon Wood 2023, Marsiaj (Turin Industrial Union): "With the gas emergency, wood remains a widespread resource"

THEgas emergency drew attention to the problem of control by a few countries of important materials. “From this point of view, the Wood it has the advantage of a widespread and not concentrated offer in a few regions and countries”. This was stated by the president of the Industrial Union of Turin Giorgio Marsiaj on the occasion of the conference "Orizzonte Legno 2023. Dynamics of a changing market" which took place today, Thursday 17 November, in the spaces of the Association. During the meeting, the currently very positive market scenarios were analyzed and strategic aspects such as packaging, logistics and construction bonuses were explored.

“Wood is also a sustainable material, being a Minimal environmental impact ”, Marsiaj continued, adding that “every cubic meter of wood used as a substitute for another material in construction reduces CO2 emissions by over a ton. The industry that feeds on it is rapidly developing, with many job opportunities for young people in various fields, from building design to wood technologies, from construction techniques to land protection. Our role as an Association is to help the supply chain of this sector become even more robust, favoring both the increase in the number of our member companies and their dimensional growth. Piedmont has enormous growth potential compared to the current situation. Suffice it to say that with 955 hectares it has almost 10% of the total national forest area”.

The Legno Arredo supply chain in Piedmont is sustainable and growing

According to the data of Federlegno, in 2021 the total turnover of the sector in Italy exceeded 49 billion euros (compared to 43 billion in 2019), of which 18 intended for export. 70 people work in the 293 wood companies. The supply chain Wood Furniture in Piedmont it has about 3.400 companies and more than 11.600 employees for a turnover of about 1 billion 360 million euros a year.

Mazzoni: "Next will be a complex year"

Matthew Mazzoni, President of the wood companies associated with Unione Industriali Torino, declared: “In this period characterized by great uncertainty and a contraction in many economic sectors, our conference gave us the opportunity for a stimulating comparison between the various rings of a delicate chain that from the producer of raw materials, through the transformer, reaches the end user. The study center of the Unione Industriali has helped us to identify the points for improvement in this chain, providing us with some important food for thought for 2023. I think that next year will be a complex year, which will require close attention in corporate decisions and I believe that should be interpreted as a transitional period of market stabilization which has been subject to abrupt changes due to the effects of the pandemic and the revolution that almost all commodities suffered in 2021 and, more recently, to the consequences that we are all still suffering from a truly absurd war”.
