Open Fiber launches “Gemona Smart City”

"Gemona Smart City”. This is the name of the project launched by Open Fiber to make the small municipality of Friuli Venezia Giulia (just over 11 inhabitants) totally digital through complete ultra-broadband cabling. The company led by Elisabetta Ripa has given the green light to the sale of fiber optic connectivity in over 2 thousand real estate units on the territory of Gemona, which will therefore be able to navigate up to the speed of one gigabit per second.

Open Fiber's investment in Gemona amounts to approx 2 million euro. The ultimate goal is to build an entirely fiber optic network, in mode Fiber To The Home (FTTH), or the technology that brings fiber to your home, allowing for a faster and more stable connection.

The "Gemona Smart City" project plans to install ultra-fast fiber also in 50 municipally owned buildings, in order to facilitate accessibility to services such as the electronic portal, cloud computing, sensor systems for environmental remote sensing or, more simply, teleworking, so necessary in times of pandemic. In addition, ultra-broadband fiber opens up a number of opportunities in healthcare, information and education.

In addition to the homes where fiber is available from today, other real estate units will gradually be connected to the ultra-fast network in the coming weeks.

"The emergency we are experiencing has made us understand once again the importance of having ultra-broadband networks - underlines the mayor of Gemona, Roberto Revelant - The economic recovery will be slow and hard, but thanks to the network that Open Fiber a great push is coming to us in the municipal area that we will try to optimize to the maximum of our strengths ".

"The works in Gemona, in compliance with the provisions and standards contained in the decrees, have not stopped - explains Alberto Sperandio, regional manager of Open Fiber - Citizens can already contact our partner operators and start surfing the web at speeds reachable with current copper or mixed fibre-copper networks".
