Winter Olympics 2026: Coni candidates Milan and Turin

Milan and Turin are the two cities that CONI has decided to nominate for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Respecting the "formal deadline indicated by the International Olympic Committee", CONI has "manifested this intention" through a letter in which it announces its "willingness to continue the dialogue phase already started in recent months following the invitation from the IOC received on 29 September 2017”.

This is what we read in the press release of the National Olympic Committee. Twelve years after the 2006 Turin Olympics, the city led by the mayor Chiara Appendino is trying again in line and with the support of Milan. They will compete together, as one city, with the aim of bringing a major sporting event such as the Winter Olympics back to Italy, after Rome's failed candidacy - vanished due to the No of the Raggi junta - for the 2024 Olympics.

On 6 March, the City of Turin had formally communicated to Coni its willingness to participate in the dialogue aimed at promoting the candidacy of the Piedmontese capital for the 2026 edition of the Winter Games

But be careful because the candidacy decided by Coni represents only a first step. In the same letter, the Committee headed by Giovanni Malago specifies that the last word will be up to the new government. The next executive will be subjected to "a feasibility study already carried out at the beginning of 2018, for an overall assessment of the entire project that can bring benefits to all of Italy also in light of the cost containment envisaged by the 2020 Agenda", explains the Coni who also recalls that collaboration between Coni, the city and the Cio will be needed to verify the best solution that adapts to the needs of the country.

Once done, the IOC will decide “which will be the candidate city”.
