The new aircraft cemetery will be born in Australia, after those in the American deserts

Planes nearing retirement have a new wintering location: Alice Springs. With its hot, dry climate, experts say, it's an ideal place to wait to be dismantled and sold.

The new aircraft cemetery will be born in Australia, after those in the American deserts

We knew the 'cemeteries of elephants' or those of dinosaurs, but the latest news tells us of an 'aircraft cemetery', the first in the southern hemisphere which will be installed in the desert of central Australia, near Alice Springs. In our hemisphere there are already three, all in the US: two in Arizona (one military, with 4200 planes parked in the sun, and one for civilian aircraft) and a third in the Mojave desert, California.

These are aircraft withdrawn from active service, waiting to be dismantled or sold, but these huge open-air warehouses will also be able to accommodate aircraft in service, up to the Airbus 380, when they are not used for low demand or other reasons. The arid and dry climate is ideal for hosting aircraft. The space needed to park flying cars indoors would cost too much.
