Mortgages, Crif: -45% in the first 5 months of 2012, -38% in May

The Crif Barometer reveals the trend in household credit applications, down by 45% in the first few months of 2012 – The May figure, -38%, is the best since the beginning of the year – ” The weakness of demand is the result of a confidence level at minimum levels and a labor market in difficulty”.

The Crif Barometer tracks the overview of credit applications to individuals and businesses in the first few months of 2012, confirming the ongoing difficulties, above all on the mortgage front, but emphasizing how, in the month of May, some timid positive signals were launched.

The press release reads that “the household credit market continues to be in trouble, conditioned by both a weak offer and a prudent demand. The weakness of demand in the first 5 months of the current year is the result of confidence at its lowest level in recent years as well as a labor market still in great difficulty".

In the tail, however, the positive notations appear: "However, the latest monthly surveys show a slight trend reversal compared to the deep decline of the previous months". Indeed, in May, yes a -38% was recorded on the mortgage loan front, which represents, despite the strong minus sign, the most positive data since the beginning of the year. Compared to the same period of the previous year, in the first five months of 2012 there is an overall contraction of 45%.

The trend of the demand for loans, in May, sees as a whole the first return from the negative sign since the beginning of the year. Compared to the gender period of 2011, again in May, the figure weighted on working days reveals total parity in loan applications from Italian households, even if considering the first 5 months of 2012, the figure remains strongly negative, with a drop of 9%.
