Since January 1, almost three thousand people have lost their lives. A painful figure reported by the International Organization for Migration.
According to calculations by the IOM observatory, in the first half of the current year, while desperately trying to reach Europe, 2.920 migrants died, over a thousand more than in the same period in 2015, when they had been in 1.838.
As of 6 July, 230.885 migrants have managed to reach Europe. The favorite destinations (because they are easier to reach) are still Italy (70.978 people) and above all Greece (158.527). The main country of departure is Libya, followed by Egypt. Most of the rescue operations took place in the Channel of Sicily.
