Merkel: agreement with Athens still possible

The German Chancellor spoke to the German Parliament. "Germany's efforts are to keep Greece in the euro." The Eurogroup is meeting today but no significant news is expected

Merkel: agreement with Athens still possible

"An agreement with the three institutions is still possible." Angela Merkel said this when speaking to the Bundestag in view of the next European council on the Greek case. This is a "decisive prerequisite" for the continuation of the program in Greece. “Germany's efforts – she said again – remain aimed at ensuring that Greece remains in the Eurozone. We want people in Greece, like people in Ireland, Portugal and Spain, to have a better perspective."

The Eurogroup is meeting today but no sensational twists are expected. Merkel continues to work towards an agreement but by now the feeling of many commentators is that we will have to wait for next week, around the meeting of the European council scheduled for 25 and 26 June.
