Bad weather, alarm weekend in 13 Regions

2021 begins in the name of bad weather, which it will persist over almost all of Italy until Epiphany. In fact, only from Thursday 7 will the sun and mild temperatures return to the peninsula. The most critical moment is right now, on the weekend of 2-3 January, when a perturbation is bringing abundant rain over the whole country on Saturday and snow in the North, even at low altitudes. It will be a little better on Sunday, with some clear spells here and there but still heavy thunderstorms also in the South and cold temperatures, with snow falling even below 1.000 meters in the Apennines. For Saturday the weather picture is so worrying that the Civil Protection has issued a yellow alert bulletin in 13 Regions, from North to South but above all in the Center-South and on the Tyrrhenian side.

The Regions concerned are Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Puglia, Basilicata, Calabria, Sicily, Veneto, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Sardinia, Lazio, Umbria. "The weather phenomena, impacting on the various areas of the country, could determine hydrogeological and hydraulic criticalities which are reported, in a national summary, in the national criticality and alert bulletin which can be consulted on the site of the Department,” explains the communiqué issued on 1 January. It will continue to rain on Monday especially on the Tyrrhenian side but there will be a respite in various regions, before a new deterioration expected for Tuesday, with new snowfalls even at low altitudes, especially in the Centre.
