Lombardy, hydrogen trains: Snam-A2A-Fnm agreement

Northern Milan Railways, A2A e Snam have signed an agreement for the development of green hydrogen trains in Lombardy. The goal is to study "provisions for the supply and refueling of hydrogen from renewable sources and the recovery of materials to power the new trains on the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo line announced by FNM and Trenord on 26 November," reads a note.

The plan, called H2iseO, will give life "in Lombardy, and in particular in Sebino and Valcamonica, to the first Hydrogen Valley Italian, providing it, starting from 2023, with a fleet of hydrogen trains and related infrastructures - continues the note - In particular, Fnm, A2A and Snam, each for their own responsibilities, will collaborate in the creation of a production and refueling system for the new clean energy trains, which will be purchased by Fnm and entrusted to Trenord and which will replace the current diesel engines on the railway line managed by Ferrovienord (100% FNM company)".

Then, by 2025, “the hydrogen solution will be extended also to local public transport, with around 40 vehicles managed in Valcamonica by FNMAutoservizi (a 100% FNM company), with the possibility of also opening up to freight logistics”.

"With this agreement - comments the CEO of Snam, Marco Alvera – we strengthen our commitment to invest in the decarbonisation of Italian railway transport thanks to hydrogen. Trains represent the first application in which green hydrogen will be competitive. For this reason, in addition to preparing our network to transport ever-increasing quantities of hydrogen, Snam's 2020-2024 plan has planned investments of around 150 million euro for the development of refueling systems dedicated to sustainable railway mobility, which will make it possible to convert the many still unelectrified sections of the Italian network. The trains will be one of the first steps in the creation of a national hydrogen supply chain, which will be able to guarantee new opportunities for development and employment”.

Meanwhile, the board of Snam resolved to submit to the extraordinary shareholders' meeting the approval of some changes to the bylaws "aimed, among other things, at reflecting society's growing commitment to the energy transition, as well as implementing the recent provisions of the Budget Law on gender balance".

The meeting will be convened for February 2nd. The board proposes to include in the statute "the company's commitment to favor the energy transition towards forms of use of resources and energy sources compatible with environmental protection and progressive decarbonisation". A commitment consistent with the strategic plan to 2024 recently presented to the market. Shareholders who do not participate in the adoption of the resolution approving the proposed amendments to article 2 of the articles of association will have the right to exercise the right of withdrawal with a liquidation price of 4,463 euros for each Snam share.
