The former Alcoa becomes a symbol: 5% to workers

Employee participation in the profits of the enterprise with a share of 5% of the total shares of the company. Yesterday's meeting at the Ministry of Economic Development on the dispute over the former Alcoa plant in Portovesme concluded with this novelty, in the presence of the top management of Sider Alloys with CEO Giuseppe Mannina, Minister Carlo Calenda, the President of the Sardinia Region Francesco Pigliaru, the commissioner of the Sulcis Plan Salvatore Cherchi, and Fim, Fim and Uilm.

Minister Calenda confirmed at the opening of the meeting the participation of Invitalia which with 20% in the share capital of Sider Alloys: in this regard, Invitalia is working on the appraisal to evaluate the total value of the company and then finalize its entry into the shareholding structure. The Minister also confirmed the participation of workers in the company's profits. The annual participation fee will be symbolic; while – and this is the novelty – a worker representative will participate in the Supervisory Board.

For the general secretary of the Fim Cisl, Marco Bentivogli, “openness to participation in these terms and with these modalities represents an absolutely positive novelty. It is the first time that this has happened in our country and it opens up unprecedented spaces on the role of the union and of the workers within the company. Now together we should understand the methods and the juridical aspects, but the industry of the future to be sustainable and competitive, cannot fail to foresee the participation of organized labor and workers in the strategic management of the company. The culture of participation and sharing, in this sense as occurs in Germany and the Scandinavian countries, is proof that participation makes businesses more economically solid and more socially sustainable. We have to find our way to participation and the skepticism that a part of the union immediately expressed seems misleading and inadequate to us - and it is even more serious to prefer nationalizations to a strategic and participatory role for workers".

A new meeting is scheduled for May 3 at the MiSE to open the discussion of the Business Plan, for that date the draft contract for the entry of Invitalia in the share capital of Sider Alloys and consequently of the workers with 5% will be analysed. while the Government and the Region will provide the answers regarding the refinancing of the social safety nets for the second half of 2018.
