After months of rumors and indiscretions, the official announcement has arrived. The Council of Ministers held this morning, April 13, decided to incorporate Anas, the company that manages the road and motorway network, into the State Railways. This was established by a provision contained in the decree to correct the accounts alongside the 3,4 billion euro maneuver on which the Ministry of Economy and Palazzo Chigi have been working intensely over the last few hours.
According to what was written by the newspaper La Stampa, the Government's decision has nothing to do with the old merger project envisaged in the recent past by the Ministry of Infrastructure, but the provision provides for the transfer of Anas to the Ferrovie group, which becomes head of the road company.
Furthermore, according to the first rumors, the new entity will remain outside the perimeter of the Public Administration in order not to overload the debt that will be contracted for investments on the state budget. For this to be made possible, however, Eurostat's ok will have to arrive.
The incorporation will create a national infrastructure pole capable of guaranteeing, according to initial calculations, up to 7,2 billion euros of public and private investments, with a turnover of 10 billion euros and 75 employees.
