Bologna airport increases separate waste collection to 50% with the Hera Group

THEBologna airport crosses the finish line by 50% of collection, doubling the results of 2021 (20%) and allocating over 220 tons of waste to recycling. To underline the desire to continue along this path and raise passenger awareness of the circular economy, the Marconi will host until March 31 2023 the works of “Scart, the beautiful and useful side of waste”, the Hera Group's artistic project which recovers waste by transforming it into works of art.

Among the many initiatives, thanks to the project for the collection e transformation of used vegetable oils into biodiesel (those remaining at the end of the food preparations) produced in the catering points inside the airport participating in the initiative, 770 kg of oil have already been collected from January to June of this year and it is estimated that the quota will be reached by the end of the year of 2.000 kg.

Il organic waste collected at the airport, it is instead destined for the production of biomethane and compost in the Hera plant in S. Agata Bolognese, and used to partly power the buses that connect the airport with the city of Bologna thanks to an agreement with Tper.

An information and awareness-raising process was also created on the correct methods of municipal waste management towards the employees of the commercial activities/concessionaires present and the cleaning agencies that carry out the waste collection service, supplemented by site inspections to verify any practical needs or clarify operational doubts.

It is also already active ReVending project for the recycling of cups and stirrers from vending machines. Further projects will also be evaluated to continue to raise the attention on separate waste collection by all those involved.

The exhibition of Hera's Scart project

Until 31 March 2023, the Bologna airport will host the exhibition of Scart project by Hera, an opportunity to further raise awareness among Marconi passengers on the issues of sustainability and the circular economy. In the external area of ​​the Marconi Business Lounge and in the new waiting room inside the Schengen boarding area, 7 works by Scart which are part of the “Business Wo/men” artistic project, a collective work on which the students of the Academies of Fine Arts in Bologna and Florence worked, made up of fourteen life-size sculptures of business men and women. Each statue, in particular, is made from 100% waste materials such as leather filaments, cardboard, seat belts, packages of frozen peas, scraps of fabric, glass, wood and flakes of recycled plastic.
