Industrial production continues to slow down. Italian industry in June recorded a drop of 8,2% compared to the same month in 2011 and 1,4% compared to May. Last month the trend decline was -6,7%. This was announced by Istat adding that in the second quarter of 2012 industrial production decreased by 1,7% compared to the January-March period. In the first six months of the year, however, production decreased by 7% compared to the same period last year.
In June all the main groupings of industries saw a negative trend. The most significant decrease on an annual basis was for intermediate goods (-10,2%), but there have been significant declines for those as well for consumption (-8%) and capital goods (-7,5%). The drop for energy was more contained (-2,1%).
In the various economic sectors, again compared to June 2011, the only growing sector was mining (+1%). The most significant declines were for i sectors of the textile, clothing, leather and accessories industries (-14,6%), the manufacture of rubber and plastic products, other non-metallic mineral products (-13,1%) and the manufacture of coke and petroleum products (-12,9%).
But in June it is the fall in car production also worsened. Compared with June last year, the production of motor vehicles marked a -22,5%, after -20,9% in May. If instead we look at the first six months of 2012, production decreased by 20,1% compared to the first half of last year.
