Istat, trade: deficit halved with non-EU countries in October

In October, Italy's trade deficit with non-EU countries more than halved compared to the same period last year, going from -1.647 to -808 million euros. Istat communicates this in the preliminary estimate, however specifying that the deficit of the energy sector (-5,3 billion euros) is greater than in October 2010 (-4,6 billion), consequently the overall reduction is determined by the figure on non-energy products, the surplus of which grows from 3 to 4,5 billion.

In general terms, last month there was a cyclical decrease in exports (-5,1%), while imports showed a slight increase (+0,2%). In the last quarter, the economic trend is however positive for exports (+1,5%) and negative for imports (-0,5%). Growth on an annual basis is clearly more sustained for exports (+8,4%) than for imports (+1,9%). Between January and October, the tendential dynamic of imports (+16,4%) is still higher than that of exports (+15,7%).

The tendential increase in exports involves all the main sectors, with the exception of durable consumer goods (-2,3%). Non-durable consumer goods (+14,6%), intermediate products (+12,4%) and energy (+9,1%) show above-average growth rates. Imports show tendential increases for energy (+14,8%) and for non-durable consumer goods (+7,8%).
