EU/China agreement on product safety

The European Union has reached an agreement with China to increase the level of surveillance on products, especially food products

EU/China agreement on product safety

The European Commission estimates that around 60% of imported products that do not comply with safety standards are of Chinese origin. For this reason, the EU and China have signed an agreement aimed at improving the surveillance of the safety conditions of goods produced for export. Controls will be carried out along the entire production chain, with particular attention paid to food products.

The European Commissioner for Health and Consumer Policy, John Dalli, said that the checks already carried out on textiles and products for children had positive results.

With this agreement, the aim is to improve the quality of the exchange of products between the two areas which today represent fundamental outlet markets for each other. In fact, the EU appears to be the first market for Chinese exports, while China ranks immediately behind the USA as an outlet market for European production.
