India, the Korean Hyunday courts the workers

It is an open struggle between the car manufacturers operating in India to guarantee the best working conditions for their workers and to secure the most qualified workers. Hyundai Motor India (HMI) has recently signed a new agreement according to which the Korean car manufacturer will offer not only salary increases, but also a series of benefits such as insurance and medical coverage. According to auto industry sources, with this offer – above the market average – Hyundai is on par with the industry leader in India, Maruti Suzuki. The agreement, which will run from 2012 to 2015, sees the average monthly salary of Hyundai workers increase by 14.283 rupees (equivalent to 204 euros), compared to the extra 14.300-14.800 rupees (equivalent to 204-211 euros) offered by Maruti . Compared to the latter, however, Hyundai guarantees its workers free transport to the workplace, making the recruitment package particularly attractive.
